Tegenwoordig kijken fotografen "voor inspiratie" vaak op internet naar de meest recente nieuwsfoto's van andere fotografen, om die vervolgens te kopiëren.
Dit is echter wel héél erg onorigineel. Alleen het shirt is anders. Je gaat natuurlijk ook flink zweten van het heen en weer rijden voor een tank om de diverse fotografen te gerieven. Zelfs in een oorlogsgebied vol dood en verderf gaat dat onaangenaam ruiken. Maar het kopieergedrag van de tweede fotograaf stinkt nog meer.
Alternatief bijschrift: deze foto kwam tot stand door 99% transpiratie en 1% inspiratie.

Magnum workshop in Brighton, 20-24 oktober 2008
The Magnum Workshop Brighton UK is a five-day practical event intended for advanced photographers wishing to proceed with the next stage of their photographic careers. Led by three Magnum photographers Carl De Keyzer, Mark Power and Donovan Wylie, this workshop is an exciting opportunity to build a new body of work under the guidance of experienced practitioners.
The event is organised in collaboration with Brighton Photo Biennale and will be held at the Centre for Research and Development at The University Of Brighton.
22 successful candidates will spend five days with all three photographers developing visual language, technical and conceptual skills and individual photographic identity. Through an intensive five days of progressive picture taking, candidates will produce an individual project under the same structure as professional assignments.
The workshop will be based at Centre for Research and Development at the University of Brighton, the location for daily reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and opportunities to learn amongst peers.
The images produced over the week will constitute an individual body of work culminating in the production of unique, singular books designed by the participants. The process of editing and critiquing the work will be a principal part of the learning process and conducted on a daily basis. Participants will be expected to provide and receive constructive comments to and from their peers as well as obtain personal critiques from the lead photographers; this is considered an integral part of the Workshop.

Guus Dubbelman over Stan Storimans
Het was een montere kerel, met opgeschoren haar en stekeltjes, die vooral in zijn jonge jaren het duw- en trekwerk niet schuwde. Maar dat heb je ook wel nodig in dit vak. Zijn fatale lot is een tragedie. Dit is pure pech. Krankzinnig.

Lezers en journalisten geschokt door foto dode cameraman
Een foto van de omgekomen RTL-cameraman Stan Storimans zorgt voor discussie in journalistiek Nederland. De foto, gemaakt door fotograaf Gleb Garanich, verspreid via persbureau Reuters en geplaatst door De Telegraaf, toont de bebloede correspondent Jeroen Akkermans die het lichaam van Storimans vasthoudt. RTL en de NOS besloten om de beelden niet uit te zenden. BNR vraagt zich af of de foto wel geplaatst had moeten worden.

Lijkt me toch echt een kwestie van "live by the sword, die by the sword." Als je er geen probleem mee hebt om gewonde en dode oorlogsslachtoffers te filmen of te fotograferen, moet je ook niet opeens huilerig gaan doen als jezelf of een van je naasten ooit een keer gewond of dood in beeld wordt gebracht. Het is nogal gratuit om de Telegraaf daarop aan te vallen. Een sensatiebeluste krant waarvan de lezers precies weten wat ze ervan kunnen verwachten. Waarom dan nu opeens hypocriet janken om een foto? Omdat de ellende te dichtbij komt?
Het verbaast me nog dat de krant van wakker Nederland deze foto niet afdrukte.
De "perfecte sportfoto" is een kwestie van smaak

Now the village is deserted and Klimchuk is dead
No one really knows how many have died in this conflict so far. But many people have lost friends. I want to take this opportunity to remember Alexander Klimchuk, colleague and occasional beer-drinking companion, a 27-year-old Georgian photojournalist who was shot dead in unclear circumstances while photographing the fighting in South Ossetia a few days ago.
Last autumn, Klimchuk and I worked together in South Ossetia, covering a government-sponsored Boney M concert in a remote, impoverished village. It was a surreal day, and we spent most of the time laughing and joking as the disco veterans belted out hits like "Daddy Cool" in the middle of what was then a "frozen" conflict zone.
That seems a long time ago, and now the village is deserted and Klimchuk is dead – another victim of the latest brutal conflict in a country most people couldn't find on a map.

Fotojournalist omgekomen in Zuid-Ossetië
Fotojournalist Alexander Klimchuk is bij de gevechten tussen Georgische en Russische troepen in de betwiste deelrepubliek Zuid-Ossetië om het leven gekomen. Ook zijn schrijvende collega Giga Tsjikladze is gesneuveld.
Klimchuk werd in 1981 in de Georgische hoofdstad Tbilisi geboren. Naast zijn werk als fotojournalist was hij oprichter, directeur en mede-eigenaar van het enige Georgische fotoagentschap Caucasus Press Images. Zijn foto's werden gepubliceerd in weekbladen als Newsweek en in dagbladen als The New York Times en Le Monde. Zijn werk werd internationaal gedistribueerd door Polaris Images en ITAR-TASS.
